US per capita seafood consumption edges up

Estimated US per capita consumption of fish and shellfish was 14.6 pounds in 2014, up marginally from the 14.5 pounds consumed in 2013, according to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), published Thursday.

US consumers spent an estimated $91.7 billion on fishery products in 2014. The 2014 total includes $61.4bn in expenditures at food service establishments, restaurants, carry-outs and caterers; $29.9bn in retail sales for home consumption; and $375 million for industrial fish products, according to the NOAA “Fisheries of the United States 2014” report.

By producing and marketing a variety of fishery products for domestic and foreign markets, the commercial marine fishing industry contributed $45.3bn (in value added) to the US gross national product.

The estimated value of the 2014 domestic production of edible and non-edible processed fishery products was $10.1bn, down $2bn, or 16%, from 2013.

The value of edible products was $9.3bn — down 2bn, or 18%, compared with 2013. The value of industrial products was $781m in 2014 — up 3.6% from 2013.

The total import value of edible and non-edible fishery products was $35.9bn in 2014—an increase of 8% compared with 2013. Imports of edible fishery products (product weight) were 5.6bn pounds valued at $20.2bn in 2014.

Volume remained essentially constant, with a decrease of 48.9m pounds, down 1%, while value increased by $2.1bn (12%) compared with 2013. Imports of non-edible products were $15.6bn—an increase of $484m (3%) compared with 2013.

Total export value of edible and non-edible fishery products was $30bn in 2014—an increase of $853 million (3%) compared with 2013.

United States firms exported 3.4bn pounds of edible products valued at $5.8bn — volume increased slightly, with an increase of 78.1m pounds (2%), while value increased $168.9m (3%) compared with 2013. Exports of non-edible products were valued at $24.2bn, $684m (3%) more than 2013.

The US supply of edible fishery products (domestic landings plus imports, round weight equivalent, minus exports) was 11.9bn pounds in 2014—an increase of 405m pounds compared with 2013.

The supply of industrial fishery products was 336m pounds in 2014 — a decrease of 230m pounds (40.6%) compared with 2013.
