Celebrating Sustainability
Listen up seafood lovers! October is National Seafood Month, a time to highlight sustainable fisheries and the smart seafood choices they provide. Ensuring that both present and future generations can enjoy the benefits of sustainable seafood
is a core responsibility of NOAA Fisheries.

We monitor and enforce marine fisheries within 4.4 million square miles and95,000 coastland miles of the U.S. exclusive economic zone. This makes U.S. fisheries some of the largest and most valuable in the world, supplying about a fifth of the seafood we eat in the United States.

Rebuilding Seafood Stocks
NOAA Fisheries tracks 473 stocks managed by 46 fishery management plans. Since 2000, we have rebuilt 39 stocks as a result of our fishery management process and very soon, we will be announcing the 40th rebuilt stock to be added
to that list. Stay tuned! Overfishing and overfished numbers also remained near all time lows in 2015. See the seafood stocks we have rebuilt by region.

Our Journey to Sustainable Fisheries
The Magnuson-Stevens Act is the primary law governing our fisheries, and it was signed into law 40 years ago in 1973. This law has helped our fisheries become sustainable.

Today, U.S. fisheries are globally recognized as responsibly managed. This key law helps prevent overfishing, rebuild overfished stocks, increase long-term economic and social benefits, and ensure a safe and sustainable seafood supply for our nation.
