California Gov. Gavin Newsom declares state of emergency as destructive Southern California fires rage
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the Pacific Palisades due to a massive wildfire that erupted on Tuesday, quickly growing to over 2,900 acres and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate. Fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, the fire began around 10:30 a.m. and escalated rapidly, with dangerous conditions expected to persist through Thursday.
Newsom held a press conference highlighting the fire’s severity and commended firefighters for their swift response. The emergency declaration, supported by a Federal Emergency Management Assistance Grant (FMAG), allows for reimbursement of 75% of eligible firefighting costs. President Joe Biden also expressed support and offered federal assistance.
Additional fires broke out in Los Angeles County, including the Eaton Canyon Fire near Altadena and the Hurst Fire in Sylmar, both prompting further evacuations and federal assistance approvals. The Los Angeles Fire Department called on off-duty firefighters to assist with the firefight as the situation intensified.
