Donald Trump and Mexican president announce one-month pause in US tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have agreed to a one-month pause on planned U.S. tariffs after a discussion between them. Trump had initially announced 25% tariffs, accusing Mexico of collaborating with crime groups, a claim Sheinbaum rejected as “slanderous.”

As part of the agreement, Mexico will deploy 10,000 national guard members to curb drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, while the U.S. will work to prevent high-powered weapons from crossing into Mexico. Trump confirmed the deal, stating the troops would also help stop illegal migration.

Negotiations will continue over the next month involving senior officials from both countries. Sheinbaum framed the agreement as beneficial to both sides and noted Trump’s commitment to addressing gun smuggling, though Trump did not mention it in his statement.
