A continued delay in the San Mateo County’s commercial Dungeness crabbing season is one piece of continued threats to the Harbor District’s fishing industry, which has faced several years of delayed crab seasons and might not see a salmon season next year.
Commercial crabbing season typically opens around Nov. 15, but high numbers of humpback whale populations in the area mean the date will continue to be pushed back to protect high numbers of humpback whales in the area from crab trap entanglement, said James Pruett, general manager for the San Mateo County Harbor District, which oversees Pillar Point and Oyster Point harbors.
