US seafood trade deficit hit USD 20.3 billion in 2023

The U.S. seafood trade deficit was USD 20.3 billion in 2023, with imports decreasing to around USD 25.3 billion and exports slightly falling to approximately USD 5 billion. In recent years, the U.S. has seen high deficits, with the largest being USD 24.8 billion in 2021. In 2022, Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam were the top suppliers to the U.S. for seafood imports. The U.S. ranked 10th globally in seafood exports by value in 2022. U.S. seafood exports have fluctuated over the years, while imports have consistently risen. Despite this, U.S. per capita seafood consumption has increased steadily. The U.S. increasingly relies on global suppliers to meet rising consumer demand, with about 80% of seafood consumption coming from abroad.
