Report Released On Human Rights And Environmental Abuses In India’s Shrimp Industry

The Corporate Accountability Lab (CAL) released a report exposing human rights and environmental violations within India’s shrimp industry, which has largely evaded scrutiny despite its significant market share. The report, based on multiyear investigations, reveals widespread abusive labor practices, including hazardous conditions and child labor, as well as environmental damage such as mangrove destruction and water contamination. CAL’s findings contradict certifications of social and environmental responsibility in the industry. India, a major shrimp producer, exported 653 million pounds of shrimp to the U.S. in 2023. CAL urges both the U.S. and Indian governments to enforce laws to prevent these abuses, noting the challenge of tracing the origin of Indian shrimp due to the informal supply chain.
