The California Coastal Commission unanimously approved Nordic Aquafarms’ fish-production factory project on the Samoa Peninsula after extensive discussion and consideration of new conditions and public feedback. The approval grants the Harbor District a permit to upgrade seawater intake infrastructure, install water pipelines, and conduct environmental mitigation activities in Humboldt Bay. Despite concerns about the project’s impact on marine life, including the intake system’s effect on planktonic organisms, mitigation measures such as removing derelict structures and restoring marsh habitats were proposed. Commissioner Mike Wilson acknowledged the project’s negative impacts but emphasized the importance of mitigation measures and the overall benefits of the project.
