Investing in America funds will supplement state and tribal programs for salmon recovery.
The Department of Commerce and NOAA have announced over $105 million in recommended funding for 14 salmon recovery projects along the West Coast and in Alaska. This funding, through the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund (PCSRF), includes Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations, $34.4 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and $7.5 million from the Inflation Reduction Act. These funds will support state and tribal efforts in Alaska, California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, focusing on habitat restoration, stock enhancement, sustainable fisheries, and research.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo highlighted the Biden-Harris Administration’s role in making this investment possible, emphasizing its significance for Pacific coast Tribes and Alaska Natives. Janet Coit, assistant administrator for NOAA Fisheries, noted the broader community and economic benefits of these investments.
Funded projects include:
- Alaska: Salmon habitat restoration and monitoring by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Consortia.
- California: Habitat restoration by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Klamath River Inter-Tribal Fish and Water Commission.
- Idaho: Habitat enhancement and salmon reintroduction studies by the Idaho Governor’s Office of Species Conservation and the Coeur d’Alene and Shoshone Bannock Tribes.
- Oregon: Salmon recovery projects by the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission.
- Washington: Habitat restoration and fishery monitoring by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and the Northwest Fisheries Indian Commission.
These projects aim to recover 28 ESA-listed salmon and steelhead species and support native subsistence and tribal treaty fishing rights.
