Eat on the Wild Side using grant money, chef partnerships to create demand for sablefish in US

Eat on the Wild Side, a nonprofit, is working to boost demand for sablefish (black cod) in response to its increasing abundance but stagnant demand. With the help of a $236,000 NOAA Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant, the organization launched a marketing campaign called NW Sablefish in July 2023 to promote the species, particularly in the U.S. Many fishermen, concerned about low market demand despite rising sablefish quotas, supported the campaign.

Sablefish catch quotas have grown significantly in recent years, reaching 62 million pounds in 2023, but demand has remained flat, causing prices to fall. A strong U.S. dollar and a weak Japanese yen have also hurt sales in Japan, traditionally a key market for sablefish. High operating costs further challenge fishermen, making sablefish fishing less viable.

The campaign focuses on promoting sablefish as a sustainable seafood choice, supported by the Marine Stewardship Council certification and responsible fishery management.
