The U.S. restaurant industry is projected to reach $1.5 trillion in sales in 2025, with a 4% growth rate, driven by a strong economy and resilient consumer demand, according to the National Restaurant Association. The industry will add 200,000 new jobs, bringing total employment to 15.9 million, making it the second-largest private-sector employer in the U.S.
While 80% of restaurant operators expect steady or increased sales, rising food and labor costs remain top concerns, with 96% citing food costs as a major challenge. In response, 65% of full-service and 44% of limited-service operators adjusted their menus to offer more affordable options.
Sales growth is expected across all segments:
- Full-service restaurants: $513B → $522B
- Limited-service restaurants: $510B → $532B
- Retail host sales: $154B (+$6B growth)
Growth will depend on balancing value and experience for consumers while improving operational efficiency, according to NRA President & CEO Michelle Korsmo.
