Legislation may legalize closed system fish farming in Alaska

If passed, this new legislation would mark a significant milestone for the state, which currently prohibits all finfish farming except for non-profit salmon hatcheries.

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has introduced legislation to permit closed-system finfish farming in the state, aiming to enhance food security and economic growth. The bill allows certain fish species to be farmed in enclosed, inland systems under strict conditions, including requiring all fish to be sterile and farms to have escape-proof barriers. However, salmonid species such as salmon and trout remain prohibited. Dunleavy emphasized that the initiative will create jobs, boost Alaska’s economy, and provide a new local and exportable food source.
