Georgia lawmakers have passed a bill requiring restaurants to label imported shrimp on their menus. Representative Jesse Petrea, who introduced the legislation, argues it will support domestic shrimpers and inform consumers about foreign shrimp, which he claims are often produced in unsanitary conditions. If enacted, restaurants must display “FOREIGN IMPORTED” next to shrimp dishes or post a visible sign stating “FOREIGN IMPORTED SHRIMP.” Similar laws exist in Louisiana and Mississippi, with efforts underway to strengthen labeling requirements. Private initiatives, such as the Patriotic Prawns program and DNA testing, also aim to promote domestic shrimp and expose misleading seafood labeling.
