Customs guidance on Trump tariffs appears to give domestic seafood a slight break

US Customs and Border Protection said any good which has at least 20 percent of its value originate in the US will see that value exempted from the 10 percent tariffs

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has provided guidance on President Donald Trump’s new tariffs, giving importers until 27 May to bring goods into the U.S. and avoid extra fees. The tariffs, effective from 5 April, impose a 10% duty on most imported goods, with some exceptions for countries like Canada and Mexico.

Key points:

  • Goods must have left warehouses before 5 April and arrive in the U.S. by 27 May to avoid tariffs.

  • Products with at least 20% U.S.-origin value will have that portion exempt from the tariff.

  • U.S.-caught seafood may be exempt when re-imported, but details are still unclear.

  • The move impacts billions in seafood imports, as the U.S. relies heavily on foreign seafood, importing $25.3 billion worth in 2023.
