California Legislature Establishes Italian Caucus

Assembly Concurrent Resolution 73, introduced by Assemblymember Stefani, designates October 2025 as Italian American Heritage Month in California. The resolution recognizes the historical and ongoing contributions of Italian Americans to the state’s cultural, economic, and civic life—highlighting their impact in industries such as agriculture, fishing, winemaking, construction, and public service.

The measure calls on schools, public institutions, and community organizations across California to commemorate the month with educational programs, ceremonies, and activities that honor Italian American heritage and its role in shaping the state.

This designation reflects the state’s broader commitment to celebrating the diversity and legacy of its communities.

ACR 73, as introduced, Stefani. Italian American Heritage Month.

This measure would proclaim the month of October 2025 as Italian American Heritage Month, and, among other things, encourage all citizens, schools, public institutions, and community organizations in California to observe Italian American Heritage Month with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and educational programs, as specified.

WHEREAS, The State of California is home to one of the largest populations of Italian Americans in the United States, and their enduring legacy has significantly shaped the cultural, economic, and social fabric of our great state; and

WHEREAS, Italian immigrants began arriving in California in significant numbers around the time of California’s official statehood in the mid-19th century, many of whom played vital roles in the development of the state’s agricultural, fishing, winemaking, and construction industries, laying the foundations for California’s prosperity and global economic significance; and

WHEREAS, Italian American farmers helped transform California into one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world, introducing time-honored cultivation practices, establishing family-run farms and vineyards, and promoting sustainable land stewardship; and

WHEREAS, In the City of Los Angeles, Italian Americans have been instrumental in shaping the region’s cultural and economic identity, from founding early agricultural cooperatives and contributing to the growth of the wine and produce industries, to enriching the city’s arts, architecture, and civic life; and

WHEREAS, In the San Francisco Bay area, Italian Americans have played a defining role in the region’s history and development by establishing strong fishing and maritime communities in North Beach and along the coast, founding businesses and restaurants that became cultural landmarks, and contributing to labor movements, civic leadership, and the preservation of public arts and spaces; and

WHEREAS, The Italian American fishing communities, particularly in the City and County of San Francisco, the City of Monterey, and the neighborhood of San Pedro in the City of Los Angeles, helped establish thriving ports and seafood industries that not only fed California, but contributed significantly to the state’s maritime economy; and

WHEREAS, Italian Americans have contributed to California’s built environment, including bridges, highways, and historic landmarks, through generations of craftsmanship in masonry, carpentry, and engineering; and

WHEREAS, The contributions of Italian Americans extend far beyond labor and industry, and notable Italian American Californians have made distinguished contributions in public service, science, business, banking, law, medicine, and sports; and

WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper for all Californians to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of Italian Americans and their vital role in the development and prosperity of our state; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims the month of October 2025 as Italian American Heritage Month throughout the State of California and honors all Italians and Italian Americans for their commitment to California’s growth and vibrancy; and be it further

Resolved, That the Legislature will continue to honor Italians’ and Italian Americans’ passion for hard work, love and dedication to family and loved ones, and the cherished opportunity to live life; and be it further

Resolved, That the Legislature encourages all citizens, schools, public institutions, and community organizations in California to observe Italian American Heritage Month with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and educational programs that celebrate and preserve the rich legacy of Italian American heritage; and be it further

Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
