Canned Tuna Recalled Over Botulism Risk in 9 States, According to FDA

According to an announcement shared by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on Jan. 19, 2026, Tri-Union Seafoods is cautioning consumers that a third-party distributor inadvertently distributed quarantined canned tuna that was associated with a February 2025 recall. The canned tuna was previously recalled due to potential risk for contamination with clostridium botulinum (which causes botulism). The products were distributed and sold in stores in nine states, and are subject to recall once again.

The canned tuna was initially recalled after Tri-Union Seafoods’ supplier informed the company that the cans’ pull tab lids had a manufacturing defect that affected the products’ seal, possibly leading to botulism contamination. Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

How to Identify the Recalled Canned Tuna

A third-party distributor accidentally shipped the quarantined, previously-recalled tuna to the following stores and states:

  • Meijer locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin
  • Giant Foods locations in Maryland and Virginia
  • Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions stores in California

The recalled canned tuna was all sold under the brand name Genova, and the new, secondary recall includes two varieties: Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil and Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt. You can determine if you have the recalled canned tuna by looking for the following identifying information:

  • Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil, 5-ounce cans in a 4-Pack; UPC 4800073265; can code S84N D2L or S84N D3L; “Best if Used By” date: Jan. 21, 2028 or Jan. 24, 2028
  • Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt 5-ounce cans; UPC 4800013275; can code S88N D1M; “Best if Used By” date: Jan. 17, 2028
