California DOJ Finalizes $248,000 Settlement with PAFCO Over Toxic Metal Exposure

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has secured a settlement with Pacific American Fish Company (PAFCO) to resolve claims that the company violated the state’s Unfair Competition Law and Proposition 65. Testing conducted by third-party enforcers confirmed that several of PAFCO’s seafood products contained levels of lead and cadmium exceeding the state’s “safe-harbor” thresholds for reproductive harm.

Under the terms of the settlement, approved by the Alameda County Superior Court on January 22, 2026, PAFCO must pay $248,000 in civil penalties and legal fees. Additionally, the company is required to implement new processing practices to minimize heavy metal contamination and ensure all future products carry the legally mandated consumer warnings. This agreement follows similar settlements reached in 2025 with Clearwater Seafoods, Seaquest Seafood Corporation, and Jayone Foods.
