The $1.6 Billion Shift: How the 2025–2030 DGA Puts Seafood Center Stage

The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) have officially arrived, and the message is clear: Seafood is no longer just an option – it’s essential.

With a renewed focus on nutrient-dense foods, the updated guidance prominently features salmon, shrimp, and canned fish, recommending that Americans aim for three or more servings per week. This shift marks a major win for public health and a significant opportunity for the industry.

Why This Matters: Closing the Nutrition Gap

Despite the known benefits, most Americans currently consume only 110 mg of EPA and DHA omega-3s daily – well below the 500 mg recommended by health experts. Seafood remains the premier source for:

  • Omega-3s & Choline: Critical for fetal brain development and lifelong cognitive function.
  • Vitamin B12: Essential for nerve health and energy.
  • Heart & Brain Health: Nutrients that support wellness at every stage of life.

The $1.6 Billion Opportunity

This updated guidance isn’t just a health win; it’s a massive economic driver. Aligning marketing, menus, and education with the new DGA could infuse $1.6 billion in annual sales into the seafood sector.

A special thank you goes to Dr. Tom Brenna, Chair of SNP’s Scientific Nutrition Advisory Council, for his dedicated service as an advisor to U.S. Health and Human Services during this cycle.

The science is settled and the roadmap is set. Now, it’s time to help America “Fall In Love With Seafood” and close the nutrition gap for good.
