People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has announced plans for a live demonstration protest at the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, Maine. The activist group is targeting the event to oppose the steaming of an estimated 16,000 live lobsters, using the festival as a platform to promote veganism and push rhetoric claiming crustacean sentience and pain perception.
Legal Escalation and Court Dismissal
This demonstration follows an aggressive legal campaign by PETA over the past year. In 2025, the organization filed a lawsuit against the city of Rockland and the festival organizers, attempting to declare the traditional steaming of live lobsters on public property a “public nuisance.”
Earlier this year, on January 26, District Judge Patrick Larson formally dismissed the lawsuit, ruling that PETA failed to meet the legal requirements to establish a public nuisance claim. Despite this courtroom defeat, PETA continues to utilize public demonstrations to generate media coverage and challenge traditional seafood harvesting.
