New Autonomous Glider to Sample Plankton Blooms

Using satellite imagery, scientists can spot the large blooms of phytoplankton that form every year in the Pacific Ocean and that last several weeks at a time. However, reaching these open-ocean locations in time to sample the plankton in time is challenging. A new unmanned autonomous marine robot, powered entirely by ocean wave action, may offer a solution.
