This memo provides modification of the Seafood Inspection Program’s (SIP) policy regarding the use of the sampling plan of 6 samples with an accept/reject number of 0. Over the past eighteen months the Seafood Inspection Program experimented with a modified sampling plan that tightened the operations characteristic curve as well as reduced the number of samples needed for large lots. Firms implementing the new Product Management Plans had been asked to adopt ths sampling plan with associated electronic worksheets to assist in collection of data. The sampling plan had some success in reducing costs but ultimately caused more disruption than necessary.
Effective immediately the field personnel of SIP will no longer be utilizing this sampling plan in the performance of their duties, and they will revert to the sampling plan found in 50 CFR Part 260 (also found in the Seafood Inspection Manual). Most lots inspected will require a sample size of 6 with an accept/reject number of 1. Firms that have adopted this sampling plan may continue its use if so desired however they are encouraged to utilize a sampling plan that works best within their Product Management Plan. Further, it is no longer expected by the firms or SIP field personnel to utilize the electronic worksheets that were previously provided. SIP field personnel will collect date on our regular scoresheets or updated documents under development as applicable. Firms that adopted the supplied electronic worksheets are encouraged to develop and use documentation that works best within their quality system.
Please contact Jen Stephenson, SIP Chief of Operations, if you have questions regarding this policy.
