Abu Dhabi is investing in floating sea cage aquaculture to enhance the UAE’s food security and protect marine biodiversity. The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) is leading a new project southeast of Delma Island in the Al Dhafra region, featuring six floating sea cages. This initiative aims to produce 100 metric tons of fish annually, about a quarter of the country’s 2021 aquaculture output. The farms will cultivate valuable fish species like gabit, safi, hamour, and sheri. Although the project’s cost remains undisclosed, it aligns with the EAD’s sustainable aquaculture policies to prevent overexploitation of local fish stocks.
