Senate Advances Bill to Strengthen Response to Harmful Algal Blooms

The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved legislation to reauthorize and expand the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act (HABHRCA), bolstering the federal government’s ability to coordinate responses to harmful algal blooms (HABs).

HABs pose a significant threat to fisheries, marine ecosystems, and the coastal communities that rely on them. “Unchecked HABs can threaten our marine life and coastal ecosystems, the livelihoods of our commercial fisheries and coastal communities, and the health and well-being of Alaskans,” said Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), who championed the bill.

As the nation’s largest seafood producer, Alaska faces outsized risks from HABs, Sullivan noted, citing the state’s extensive coastline and critical role in U.S. seafood supply. The reauthorization is intended to improve ocean health monitoring and ensure a more coordinated, science-driven response to harmful algal blooms – key issues for seafood producers and harvesters across the country.
