CDFW Launches In-Season Salmon Tracking Dashboard for Reopened Fishery

As the California commercial ocean salmon fishery returns for its first active season in four years, managing our harvest sustainably and transparently is more critical than ever. To support our fleet and processing sectors, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has officially launched a new digital tracking dashboard designed to monitor in-season salmon harvests in real time.

Because the 2026 season operates under strict regional harvest guidelines and vessel-based trip limits, this digital tool is a crucial asset for our industry. It utilizes weekly landing data to show exactly how many Chinook salmon have been landed so far, and how many remain available before regional quotas are reached.

Why This Matters:

  • Real-Time Data: The dashboard allows commercial fishermen, buyers, and processors to track the proximity to the state’s harvest limit, helping businesses better project supply chains and plan operations.
  • Proactive In-Season Management: Under the new management structure, fisheries can close early if regional guidelines are met before scheduled end dates. Staying informed via this tracker prevents operational disruptions.
  • Current Status: As of late May, the commercial tracker notes that approximately 30,000 salmon have been landed out of the state’s 83,000-salmon limit, leaving roughly 53,000 available for harvest.

The reopening of our salmon fishery is a testament to the hard work of state, federal, Tribal, and commercial fishing interests collaborating to rebuild these vital stocks. Embracing these new digital tools will ensure we can responsibly maximize the economic value of this season while protecting the long-term sustainability of California’s fisheries.

Members can access the live commercial tracking dashboard directly via the CDFW Ocean Salmon Fishery Information Page.
