Packaging Is Becoming an Important Part of the Seafood Brand Promise

Packaging is increasingly more than a way to protect and transport food products. As consumer expectations evolve, packaging has become an important part of how brands communicate product quality, sustainability, convenience, and corporate values.

For seafood companies, packaging presents an opportunity to differentiate products, build consumer trust, and reinforce the qualities that make their products appealing. Consumers increasingly expect packaging to preserve freshness and food safety while also being convenient, resource-efficient, and environmentally responsible.

Sustainability is becoming a particularly important consideration. Food companies are exploring opportunities to reduce packaging materials, incorporate alternative materials, and improve recyclability and end-of-life outcomes. However, transitioning to more sustainable packaging requires balancing environmental goals with the practical demands of food preservation, shelf life, food-contact safety, transportation, and production efficiency.

Industry experts emphasize that successful packaging decisions require early collaboration among food producers, packaging suppliers, and equipment manufacturers. Alternative materials may perform differently during sealing, filling, storage, and transportation, making real-world testing essential before adopting new packaging solutions at scale.

Regulatory developments are also adding urgency to the conversation. California is among seven states that have enacted extended producer responsibility (EPR) packaging laws. Under California’s SB 54, covered single-use packaging sold in the state must meet recyclability or compostability requirements by 2032. These requirements are increasing the importance of understanding packaging materials, environmental claims, and end-of-life options.

Ultimately, packaging is both a functional necessity and a marketing tool. Its materials, design, convenience, and environmental attributes all influence how consumers perceive a product and the company behind it. For seafood businesses, aligning packaging choices with product quality, sustainability commitments, and consumer expectations can help strengthen brand identity and build lasting customer loyalty.
