On September 5, Acting Governor Gavin Newsom ( Governor Brown was out of the country) sent two letters to US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross recommending that he declare the sardine fishery and the sea urchin fishery an economic disaster.
CFSI was pleased to lend assistance that lead to these two actions on behalf of the industry and members that harvest and process and sell sardine and urchin. The fisheries are distinct, but the impact to the processors and fishermen from both were negatively affected by biological conditions that lead to the economic conditions.
